Car Crashed into Charles River – Two Dead in Boston Car Accident

According to a recent news article from CBS Boston, two people were killed when a pickup truck crashed into the Charles River. Massachusetts State Police have said the 2010 Toyota pickup truck was driving on Nashua Street in Boston. This is the area on the waterfront where city jail is located.

skyline-of-boston-1224185-300x225Witnesses say the pickup truck collided with an Acura in a traffic circle just before 7 p.m.   Vehicle crash inspectors believe the truck lost control completely after the collision, broke through a guardrail, drove off Charles River Dam Road, and fell around 40 feet, landing in the water. At the time the truck went into the river, there were two people in it, a 36-year-old woman and a 36-year-old man, both from Rhode Island.

Once witness to what turned out be to be a double fatal accident, said he could not believe what he was seeing. He said he heard a car horn followed by a loud crashing sound, and he watched as a piece of the elevated roadway was destroyed. He then saw taillights as the truck plummeted into the Charles River.

First responders were called to the scene immediately following the horrific accident, and the first to respond called for divers to report to the scene as well. The divers and their boat crews went to the location of the submerged pickup truck and managed to get both occupants out. They had been completely submerged for quite some time, but rescue workers performed CPR and tried to revive them. At this point, they were transported by ambulance to Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), located just next to the Charles River Basin. Unfortunately, they were pronounced dead soon after they arrived at the hospital.

Following the victims being removed from the deadly accident scene, dive crews from various departments, including Massachusetts State Police, Boston Police, Cambridge Police, and Boston Fire and EMS stayed in the water to rig up tow cables to the submerged pickup up, so it could be pulled out of the water and towed away.

Authorities say the driver of the Acura also involved in this deadly Boston car accident was a 35-year-old woman from Milton, Massachusetts, and she had with her a 35-year-old woman from New York as her passenger. Fortunately, both occupants in the Acura were not injured in this fatal car accident.

While authorities believe they understand the events that took place, they do not know why the pickup truck lost control in the first place, starting this tragic series of events. It should be noted that nobody has been found to be negligent in connection with the deadly crash as of the time this article was published.

Whenever the driver of a vehicle believed to be responsible is killed in an accident, it is typical for the Office of the State Medical Examiner to perform a full autopsy that includes toxicology. If the toxicology comes back positive for alcohol or drugs, it is possible there will be a determination as to fault.
