Report: Fire Truck Crashes into SUV in Boston Resulting in Five Injured

When a 30-ton fire truck crashes into a line of cars, it is not hard to imagine that there would be a lot of damage and multiple people injured.  This is exactly what happened recently, according to a news article from News 5 Boston.

mQo4CWyBoston Fire Department (BFD) officials have said the fire apparatus involved in the crash (Engine No. 7) was responding to a report of smoke at the time and had all lights, sirens and other emergency equipment in operation at the time of the accident. The call was on Boylston Street in downtown Boston, and the engine was approaching the intersection of Commonwealth Avenue and Dartmouth Street when witnesses heard what they described as a very loud bang and then some more crashing sounds.

One witness said the driver of a red SUV entered the intersection when the fire engine was making its way through, and the engine crashed into the SUV. Even though it was responding to a call, it was not believed to be speeding, but the tremendous weight of the fire apparatus caused considerable damage and personal injury.

Once the engine made contact with the red SUV, it was deflected in a different direction and crashed into a line of about ten cars that were parked alongside the street. At least some, if not all, of the cars were totaled when they were hit by the fire engine.

When other first responders arrived at the scene, they learned that five people were injured, including one civilian and four firefighters. It is believed BFD personnel were banged around in the cab of the engine, and it was not clear whether or not they were wearing their seatbelts at time of this Boston truck accident.

The injuries to the firefighters were not believed to be serious in nature.  They were transported to Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) where they were treated and released, and the one civilian was taken to Tufts Medical Center, which is a level-one trauma center in Boston.  The condition of the civilian is not believed to be life threatening at this time, but there has been no report of that victim’s condition, and his or her identity has not yet been released.

If you are involved in an accident involving a municipal vehicle, there is likely to be a lot of investigation performed by the government. While that investigation may yield useful results to your possible Boston car accident lawsuit, in some cases, the government has other motives in mind when conducting an investigation.  For that reason, it is best to speak with an experienced car accident lawyer as soon as possible.

The reason for this is because he or she can get his or her private accident investigator to go out to the scene and start collecting evidence as early as possible.  This is important, because witnesses will become more difficult to find over time and evidence will get lost.  Changes in season and light levels can also make it much harder to get an accurate photograph of what the road conditions looked like at the time of the accident, and this is very important.
