In recent months, we have heard several news accounts of cars that crashed into buildings in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In some of these cases, there was a car that allegedly crashed into a home or apartment building while residents were sleeping. In other cases, we have heard about cars crashing into Massachusetts restaurants and bars. According to a recent news article in the Marblehead Patch, an elderly driver allegedly crashed his vehicle into a local real estate business.
Authorities are reporting that the single vehicle crash occurred around 2:30 p.m. in Marblehead, Massachusetts. Witnesses say the car had apparently lost control and veered off the road causing it to crash into the real estate broker’s office. In addition to the elderly driver, there was at least one other occupant at the time of the accident, who was also elderly.
When Marblehead Police arrived at the scene of the car accident, they found the occupants of the vehicle were still inside, as they became trapped by debris from the building that had fallen on top of the car. First responders also discovered the real estate business was open at the time of the Massachusetts car accident, and there were several workers still inside. Fortunately, while the workers inside the real estate business appeared very shaken up by the car accident, they did not suffer any personal injury from the car crash.
However, despite saying they were not harmed, first responders still examined all occupants of the building to see if they did actually suffer any injuries from the crash. First responders also assessed the condition of the occupants of the car and determined they did not suffer any personal injury either, and the elderly occupants all declined medical treatment and a ride to the hospital, according to a police statement. A family member eventually gave them a ride home.
As our Boston car accident lawyers can explain, if you are ever involved in a car accident and are offered medical attention, it is best never to decline medical attention or a ride to a hospital. There are several reasons for this. First and foremost, you may not be fully aware of the extent of your injuries, or even that you are injured at all, and the EMTs or paramedics do not have the equipment necessary at the scene of an accident make a proper diagnoses in many cases. It is also important to understand that some types of injuries, such as those to the head, neck or spine may not become apparent until some time after the accident. If this happens, by having gone to the hospital, you will have a record that may prove very useful in your personal injury lawsuit following a serious car accident.
In the case of the Marblehead accident, even though nobody was injured, the scene was quite chaotic. There was large hole in the side of the multi-story building, potentially affecting its structural stability, a need to pull the car out of the hold, and damage to the power utilities serving the structure. As a precaution, power to the building and surrounding area had to be shut down for a number of hours and the street was closed.
