According to a recent report from My Fox Boston, two victims are in the hospital after a serious car accident in the greater Boston Area. At least one victim is listed as in critical condition.

According to a recent news article from the Boston Globe, a Massachusetts State Police trooper was seriously injured in a crash on the Massachusetts Turnpike (Mass Pike). Authorities say trooper was conducting a work detail in a Ford Explorer owned by MSP when a truck hit his vehicle. First, a detail is when an officer is off duty officially but being paid to watch a construction sight. This money is paid from the construction company and given to the trooper.

1235172_beeThe trooper was seriously injured in the car accident and was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in Boston. Doctors were still evaluating the total extent of his injures.  Troopers have not release any information about the driver of the semi tractor-trailer or whether he was injured. Continue reading

According to a recent article form the Salem News, a 50-year-old woman and her friend were riding their bikes in Salem, when she was hit by a horse trailer being towed by a pickup truck. It was at first considered to be a hit-and-run accident, because the driver of the vehicle never stopped to see what happened to the victim, but authorities were not certain the driver knew his trailer had hit a bicycle rider.

nriv4oeThere was, however, no question the victim knew the horse trailer hit her. When first responders arrived, they determined she had suffered life-threatening injuries, and they called for a medevac helicopter to transport her Boston Medical Center’s trauma center. When she arrived at the hospital, she was immediately taken into an emergency room, where they tested her for brain damage and paralysis. She was also treated for her broken collarbone, shoulder, elbow and skull fractures. According to a recent news article from Fox News, doctors performed a first of its kind operation and were able to successfully reattach the head of a toddler who had actually been decapitated in a serious car accident.

457973__1The accident occurred in Australia while the family was driving their car, and there was serious collision between their car and another vehicle. The mother in the driver’s seat said she was saved by the airbags, but her toddler was not so lucky. She said his neck was broken, and he was airlifted to the hospital, where one of the most well known spinal surgeons learned that the child’s spinal cord had broken and separated from the child’s brain. Medically, this is considered a decapitation, though the skin and muscle tissue in the child’s neck was still intact. For this reason, doctors use the term internal decapitation to describe this type of injury. Continue reading

Massachusetts State Police have released information that one woman died after a serious four-car accident in Mansfield, Massachusetts, according to a recent news article from NECN.

self-driving-google-car-2Authorities say the four-car crash occurred on Route 95 shortly after 3 a.m. Reports indicate a 27-year-old man from Revere, Massachusetts driving a BMW lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a Ford Explorer. Massachusetts State Police troopers are still conducting an investigation, along with the department’s accident reconstruction and investigation team, and they do not yet know why driver lost control of the BMW. After hitting the Ford Explorer, which rolled over and landed in the median, the BMW broke down completely and was hit by a Lexus. According to recent news feature from My Fox Boston, three people were badly injured in a car accident. Authorities say the accident occurred in Lowell during afternoon rush hour.

Witnesses say an SUV was traveling west on Pawtucket Boulevard, and they believe it was speeding when it lost control and hit the curb. After the SUV hit the curb, it was deflected back into the lane of opposing traffic, and hit by another car being driven by a 24-year-old woman. The driver of the SUV was a 24-year-old man, and there was one passenger is his vehicle, according to police.   When first responders arrived at the scene, they saw tremendous wreckage. The SUV was hit so hard by the oncoming car that it ended up in the front yard of a house alongside the roadway. This particular section of road is well known for traffic accidents, and the owner of that house reported his home has been hit on numerous occasions. It has been hit four times by crashed cars in the past four years as well as numerous other occasions. He said there was another car on his lawn last month. Continue reading

According to a recent news article from the Chelmsford Patch, a Boston man was struck and killed by a pickup truck while he is was in his wheelchair. The fatal pedestrian accident occurred on a recent Saturday afternoon.

mCoTPRcWitnesses to the tragic accident immediately called 911, and emergency personnel quickly arrived on scene. When first responders arrived at the site of the deadly Massachusetts traffic accident, they found the 72-year-old victim lying in the road with the driver of pickup truck that hit him. First responders knew they had to get to a level-one trauma center as soon as possible, so they called for a medevac helicopter. However, paramedics on scene were unable to stabilize victim to a point where he would be safe for travel in the helicopter, so the medevac transport was called off and returned to base without the patient. We often the use the term “accident” to imply that an event just happened, as if nobody is at-fault. This isn’t necessarily a fair and accurate label for an event that transpired.   While it is true that most of what we called accidents are not on purpose, many of them could have been avoided by exercising a little more care.

mhiCs9gWhen something happens because a person did not act carefully enough, then what we really have is a negligent act. A negligent act is not only preventable, but also actionable in a court of law.

According to a recent new article from City Lab, the media is using the term accident when cars collide when, instead, it should be using the term crash. The difference is that most crashes are someone’s fault and would have been prevented with proper care. Continue reading

According to a news article from the Tewksbury Patch, a three-car accident that recently occurred left several injured, including one elderly man with serious head trauma. Witnesses say the accident occurred just prior to 11 a.m. on Main Street in Tewksbury near several local businesses, including Mahoney’s Too and John Ryan’s Pub.

mw76UPwWhen first responders arrived at the scene, they immediately assessed the victims’ condition and discovered the one elderly victim was far more severely injured than the others. They called for a medivac helicopter, which landed at John Ryan’s Pub. The flight crew stabilized the patient and transported him to a local level-one trauma center in the Boston area. In recent months, we have heard several news accounts of cars that crashed into buildings in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In some of these cases, there was a car that allegedly crashed into a home or apartment building while residents were sleeping. In other cases, we have heard about cars crashing into Massachusetts restaurants and bars. According to a recent news article in the Marblehead Patch, an elderly driver allegedly crashed his vehicle into a local real estate business.

Witnesses say the car had apparently lost control and veered off the road causing it to crash into the real estate broker’s office. In addition to the elderly driver, there was at least one other occupant at the time of the accident, who was also elderly. Continue reading
